Rentiesville gained national attention through the annual Dusk ’til Dawn Blues Festival, founded by musician and educator D.C. Minner and his wife Selby. The festival helped preserve Oklahoma’s blues heritage and brought internationally known artists to a town with only a small population.

Rentiesville was founded in 1903 during a remarkable period when African Americans established more than 50 self-governing communities in Oklahoma. It remains one of the best-known surviving examples of this unique chapter in American history.

Renowned historian John Hope Franklin spent part of his childhood in Rentiesville, where his father, Buck Colbert Franklin, practiced law. John Hope Franklin later became one of America’s most influential historians and a leading authority on African American history.

While many of Oklahoma’s All-Black towns declined or disappeared, Rentiesville endured. Residents and supporters have worked for generations to preserve its history, churches, cemetery, school legacy, and cultural traditions, making it a living link to an important era of Black self-determination.
